Celanese Closes South Korea Plant, Shifts Production to China and India

2026-06-08

Celanese Corp. is immediately ceasing manufacturing operations at its engineered materials compounding facility in Ulsan, South Korea, as part of a strategic network optimization initiative designed to strengthen its Asian production footprint and enhance customer service capabilities. Revealing plans to transfer production volumes to three strategically located facilities: Nanjing and Shenzhen in China, and Silvassa in India. The move represents a critical step in the company's 'Grow & Fortify' strategy for its Engineered Materials business.

Strategic consolidation

The optimization initiative aims to fortify the operating structure of Celanese's Engineered Materials business while leveraging world-class compounding assets across Asia. By consolidating operations into fewer, more advanced facilities, the company expects to optimize costs, improve manufacturing efficiency, and strengthen its regional supply chain network.

Celanese has committed to supporting customers throughout the transition, ensuring fulfillment of all contractual obligations and maintaining supply continuity. The company emphasized that production will shift seamlessly to other manufacturing locations in the region, minimizing disruption to customer operations.

Building capacity near growing markets

The strategic repositioning reflects Celanese's focus on expanding manufacturing and compounding capabilities closer to its customer base in high-growth Asian markets. The company produces critical materials including PET (polyethylene terephthalate), PA (polyamide), PBT (polybutylene terephthalate), and HTN (high-temperature nylon) — all essential to driving industry and regional growth across automotive, electronics, consumer goods, and industrial applications.

Over recent years, Celanese has invested significantly in world-class compounding assets globally to ensure supply reliability and deliver engineered materials products with superior quality, performance, and reliability. The Nanjing, Shenzhen, and Silvassa facilities represent advanced manufacturing capabilities positioned to serve the broader Asia region's expansion opportunities.
